I will tell you the main sluggers and main pitchers of Seibu Lions in '01~'07. In 2001 the super slugger came to Japan from República Bolivariana de Venezuela which is in South America Continent. His name is Alexander Alberto Cabrera. At the same time, he participated in Seibu Lions. He recorded Hits 145, HR 49, RBI 124, and Average.284 in spite of the rookie and 30 age in this season. Both of the HR and RBI are the foreign rookie player records. Of course he played as 4th batter and first baseman. In the same year Scott Michael McClain who is from California, United States of America. He recorded HR 39, so the combi of Alex Cabrera and Scott McClain were called Twin Bazooka. McClain played as 5th batter and third baseman in this season. However, McClain was as low batting average slugger as George Alberto Arias who belonged to Orix Blue Wave. Both of two were born in 1972. Kazuo Matsui recorded Hits 170, Average.308, HR 24, and RBI 76. He played as 3rd batter and short stop. His best RBI is 90 which he recorded in the previous year. The main pitchers of 2001 were Daisuke Matsuzaka, Fumiya Nishiguchi, and Kiyoshi Toyoda. Especially, Matsuzaka got the titles of the most winnnings pitcher, K king, and Eiji Sawamura Award. Toyoda was elected as Lions' closer on the way of 2001. In spite of having great potential, Lions ended in 3rd in this season. At the same time, Osamu Higashio manager quitted his job.
In 2002 Haruki Ihara became the manager of the Lions. Lions became Pacific League Champions although Lions was defeated four games in a row by Yomiuri Giants in Nippon Series. Four years had passed since Lions became the champions. Ihara achieved 90 wins in spite of rookie manager in the season. It is the Nippon Professional Baseball record. The main sluggers were Kazuo matsui, Tatsuya Ozeki, Alex Cabrera, and Kazuhiro Wada. Matsui achieved triple three (.300, 30HR, and 30 steals). Finally, Matsui recorded Hits 193, HR 36, AVG.332, Steals 33, and RBI 87. He participated in all 140 games in this season. Matsui also got the title of Most Hits. Of course he got both Best Nine and Golden Grab Award. Alex Cabrera recorded AVG.336, HR 55, RBI 115, and Hits 150. Especially, HR 55 is Nippon Professional Baseball Tie record (No.1 of all Right Batters ). He also recorded four balls 100 and on-base percentage .467. He got the titles of HR King, the Highest On-Base Percentage, and Most Valuable Player. The RBI King of 2002 was Tuffy Rhodes (117 RBI), and The Highest AVG hitter of 2002 was Michihiro Ogasawara (AVG.340). I think that Alex Cabrera is the nearest triple crown slugger. He played as 4th batter and first baseman in 2002. At the same time he was elected Best Nine as the best first baseman. Kazuhiro Wada recorded AVG.319, HR 33, RBI 81, and Hits 140. He was also elected The Best Desinated Hitter. Tatsuya Ozeki got the titles of Best Nine and Golden Grab Award. He had already gotten the title of Best Rookie in 1998. The main pitchers were Nishiguchi, Toyoda, Shinji Mori, and Koji Mitsui. Shinji Mori played as a set upper, so he got the title of the Best Set Upper. Toyoda recorded 44 save points (38 saves +6 wins). It is Pacific League record. Of course, he got the title of the Best Closer.
In 2003 Lions ended in 2nd because the pitchers was broken down. This season's main sluggers were Matsui, Cabrera, McClain, and Wada. Matsui recorded AVG.305, HR 33, RBI 84, and Hits 179. Of course he got Best Nine for seven years running since 1997. At the same time, he got Golden Grab Award for two years running since 2002. In addition, he had participated in All Star Game for seven years running since 1997. Cabrera recorded AVG.324, HR 50, RBI 112, and Hits 148. The Highest AVG hitter of 2003 was also Ogasawara (.360), and the HR King was Rhodes (51). The RBI King was Nobuhiko Matsunaka (123). He got the title of Best Desinated Hitter. In 2004 Tsutomu Itoh became the manager of the team. However, Cabrera was hit by a pitched ball in the preseason game, so he could not return to the first team of Seibu Lions until the latter half of June. Still, Cabrera recorded AVG .280, HR 25, and RBI 62 participating in 64 games. The main sluggers were Kazuhiro Wada, Jose Fernandez, Hiroyuki Nakajima. Wada recorded AVG.320, Hits 126, HR 30, and RBI 89. Fernandez recorded AVG.285, Hits 146, HR 33, and RBI 94. Nakajima recorded AVG.287, Hits 144, HR 27, and RBI 90. All of three contributed to Nippon Series Champions. However, season rank was 2nd. After that, Lions defeated Fukuoka Daiei Hawks in Play-off of 2004. Especially, Nakajima achieved RBI 90 in spite of 22 age. The main pitchers were Kazuyuki Hoashi, Matsuzaka, Chih-chia Chang, and Toyoda. The title holder was Matsuzaka only. He got the title of the Best ERA.
In 2005 Lions ended in 3rd with gotten a big lead by Chiba Lotte Marines and Fukuoka Soft Bank Hawks. The main sluggers were Wada, Yoshihito Ishii, Cabrera, and Nakajima. Wada got the titles of the Highest Hitter and the Most Hits. Ishii recorded AVG.312. This is Pacific League No.4. Alex Cabrera recorded AVG.300 (League No.10), HR 36 (League No.3), and RBI 92 (League No.3). The main pitchers were Daisuke Matsuzaka, Fumiya Nishiguchi, and Kazuyuki Hoashi. Matsuzaka got the title of K-King.
In 2006 Lions could not become Pacific League Champions. Still, Yasuyuki Kataoka recorded 28 steals (Pacific League No.2), and Nakajima achieved AVG.306. Wada recorded RBI 95 (League No.3). Alex Cabrera got the title of RBI King. His record of 2006 was AVG.315 (League No.2), HR 31 (League No.2), and RBI 100 (League No.1 tie) Cabrera could not become either the Highest AVG or HR King. The former's title holder was Nobuhiko Matsunaka (.324). The latter's title holder was Michihiro Ogasawara. In the year Ogasawara got MVP. The main pitchers were Matsuzaka, Hideaki Wakui, and Chikara Onodera. Wakui marked 12 wins. Matsuzaka marked 17 wins. Onodera recorded 36 save points (29 saves+7 wins).
In 2007 Lions became B-class since 1981. Lions had kept A-class since 1982, so Tsutomu Itoh Manager quitted his job. Still, Nakajima recorded AVG.300 (League 5th), Hits 160 (League 3rd), RBI 74, and HR 12. Cabrera recorded AVG.295 (League 8th), HR 27 (League 3rd), and RBI 81 (League 5th). Wada recorded AVG.315 (League 3rd) and 158 hits. However, the RBI reduced by half. The main pitchers were Takayuki Kishi and Hideaki Wakui. Although Kishi could not got the title of Most Valuable Rookie, he got the award of Valuable Rookie. His result was 11 wins/7 losses/ ERA 3.40. Wakui got the title of Most Winnings Pitcher. His result was 17wins/10losses/ ERA 2.79. At the same time Kataoka got the title of Steal King.
